TSCRA sends special rangers, supplies to Ike-ravaged counties
Members of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) special ranger force are converging in southeast Texas to aid cattle raisers in the Gulf Coast area highly impacted by Hurricane Ike over the weekend. TSCRA efforts began last Friday before Hurricane Ike made landfall when TSCRA members were asked for help with vacant pastures and available feedstuffs. TSCRA is actively involved with the emergency response team, lead by the Texas Department of Agriculture (TDA). The Texas AgriLife Extension Service (TAES) is the team member coordinating much needed resources for the affected areas. more
Texans are called upon to assist saving thousands of livestock stranded after Hurricane Ike
Agriculture Commissioner Todd Staples today announced joint efforts with local, state and federal partners as well as statewide agricultural organizations to meet the needs of thousands of agricultural producers impacted by Hurricane Ike. Commissioner Staples is expressing an urgent plea to Texans across the state to assist in any way they can to help farmers and ranchers hit hard by the deadly storm. more
Feed, resources needed in Chambers, Jefferson counties to aid 20,000 displaced livestock
An estimated 20,000 head of displaced cattle and horses in both Chambers and Jefferson counties are in immediate need of hay and fresh water resulting from Hurricane Ike's storm surges in southeast Texas, livestock officials said Monday. Contributions of hay, water troughs, feedstocks, such as range cubes, or cash contributions are needed in helping keep the cattle alive. more
Researchers to update TSCRA on efforts to control fire ants
Drs. Larry Gilbert and Ron Plowes will update cattle raisers on their research on controlling imported fire ants at TSCRA's fall meeting, Sept. 21-23, Tyler. Gilbert will report on the results of past and ongoing releases of several species of Pseudacteon phorid flies in about 40 sites in Texas in a cooperative effort to bring pest fire ants under control. more
