Safety pays for Cattle Raisers Safety Group
More than $300,000 has been paid to the members of Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association (TSCRA) Safety Group, more formally known as the TSCRA Workers Compensation purchasing group. Approximately 300 TSCRA members purchase Workers Compensation policies through Wortham Insurance and Risk Management and Texas Mutual. This marks the fifth consecutive year that members of TSCRA's Workers Compensation purchasing group have received a group dividend in addition to the regular dividend. more
Texas prepares for Hurricane Ike
Gov. Rick Perry Monday issued a disaster declaration in response to the significant threat posed by Hurricane Ike to 88 Texas counties. The governor's declaration allows the state to initiate necessary preparedness efforts, such as pre-deploying resources requested by local officials to ensure their communities are ready to respond to severe weather. more
2008 Texas drought losses estimated at $1.4 billion
Lack of rain and scorching temperatures hit Texas' agricultural crops and beef operations hard late spring and summer, leading to an estimated $1.4 billion in drought losses, Texas AgriLife Extension Service economists reported Monday. Crop losses were estimated at $1.1 billion, while livestock losses tallied $260 million, which includes lost hay production, added supplemental feed costs and other production expenditures. more

For the week ending Sept. 6, feeder cattle price trends at Texas auctions were mostly steady to $5 per hundredweight higher, with some instances up to $10 higher. The higher prices were in response to lower grain prices. more
