Cuellar: Customs and Border Protection halts border fence construction in three Valley segments
The Bush Administration has decided not to move forward with construction of the border fence in three parts of the Rio Grande Valley for the rest of the year, U.S. Rep. Henry Cuellar has announced. Customs and Border Protection had wanted to erect almost four miles of "movable" fencing in Roma, almost nine miles of fencing in Rio Grande City, and just less than two miles of fencing in Los Ebanos. Cattle ranchers' beef with Hurricane Ike
Harold Clubb, a 76 year-old life-long rancher, knows about working the land. But with the damage Hurricane Ike left behind, Clubb is now facing his biggest challenge; as many as 6,000 cattle in the region were killed and that as many as 20,000 more were lost or left roaming in the wake of the storm. Clubb says that these days, he spends much of his time sorting through his herd and trying to decipher which animals belong to him. more

This information is based on producer needs identified at the recent Hurricane Ike recovery meeting in Winnie and contains contact information for state and federal agencies, along with services they provide that might benefit producers affected by the storm. more
 

Strong beef exports are a bright spot
In the U.S. there is a shift occurring, with greater demand for lower cost beef items, which has pushed the price of beef cattle down over the past several weeks. According to World Agriculture Outlook Board Chairman Gerry Bange, a positive in the beef market is that exports are improving. more
 

Mazurkiewicz to direct Texas AgriLife Extension's leadership program
Dr. Jim Mazurkiewicz has been named leadership program director for the Texas AgriLife Extension Service. His new position is an expansion of his previous duties as administrator of AgriLife Extension's Texas Agricultural Lifetime Leadership (TALL) program. more
